An analysis of the initial hypothesis – “development of a collaborative concept mapping/mind mapping tool to enhance learning” is made to gather project’s requirements. This project is concerned with the development of a collaborative concept mapping/mind mapping tool that can be used to aid the process of learning, provide a user-friendly environment where users can collaborate on and organise their ideas and thoughts. The integration of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) in education can be used as a lever for change towards creating a new more effective environment for learning (Commission, 2001). Currently, interest in technology-supported learning (e-learning) has increased. Concept mapping and mind mapping methods can be used to assist an individual or a group to make abstract ideas more visible and concrete, organise knowledge in an understandable visual way and connect prior knowledge with new concepts by utilizing a visual structure for planning and thinking. Research in both cognitive psychology and educational theory has shown that visual learning is one of the most innovative and effective ways to support organization of knowledge and human education. Studies have shown that graphical methods such as concept mapping and mind mapping can be used to aid learning activities more effectively in contrast to other learning methods. In the last decade, research has explored new ways to support human learning, beyond the traditional methods used to date. In this paper we are trying to investigate different user profiles and to identify various axes for comparison among mind mapping tools that are suitable for a specific user profile, describe each axis and then analyze each tool. The “best” depends so much on how you use mind maps. An often question that comes up, due to this plethora of software tools, is “which is the best mind mapping software?” Anyone who gives you an immediate answer either knows you and your mind mapping activities very well or their answer in not worth a lot. In resent years, a wide variety of mind mapping software tools have been developed. Also, in a world of information overload and businesses struggling to keep up with the place of change, knowledge workers need effective tools to organize, analyze, brainstorm and collaborate on ideas. Their suitability as a pedagogical tool for education, e-learning and training, increases their importance. It can also be used as complementary tools for knowledge construction and sharing. By using Mind Maps, you can quickly identify and understand the structure of a subject and the way that pieces of information fit together, as well as recording the raw facts contained in normal notes. Mind Mapping is an important technique that improves the way you takes notes, and enhances your creative problem solving.
